With the first team match in New Romney postponed, it was off to Bridge to watch the reserves. The eventual 8-2 scoreline does not tell the whole story though.
Woodnesborough turned up with only 9 players, but at least they turned up (unlike the ref!), including a larger than life goal keeper, who I suspect was not 'playing' in his normal position, but although he conceded 8 goals, you couldn't really criticise him, except for the Aston Villa shirt he was wearing! He pulled off a string of great saves and almost single-handedly kept the City score to single figures.
Kind hearted City, no doubt embarrassed by their superiority in numbers, allowed the visitors a goal within about a minute of the start, with some poor marking at a corner, no doubt thinking that this might even things up a bit, and from them on pounded the Woodnesborough goal for the rest of the first half, but some resolute and sometimes it has to be said fortunate defending, and the aforementioned keeper, with a superb one handed dive and tip round the post amongst other saves, kept City at bay until about the 40th minute when finally Adam Woolcott managed to equalise. It was probably inevitable that with their lack of numbers and having to play up the slope in the second half that City would eventually overrun their opponents. The second half started and almost immediately Karl Williams signalled his intent first forcing the keeper to a save, and then from the resulting corner heading home for 2-1. Soon after Dan Bonnywell made it 3-1 cleverly flicking in a cross from Chris the right back (sorry - not sure of your surname). Williams then got his second from a pull back for 4-1, Woolcott then got numbers 5 and 6, both good goals after some clever build up play and inter-passing. Then, much to everyone's surprise, Danny Wrench got a touch of the ball, virtually his first in the second half, but unfortunately it was to pick the ball out of the net, after a Woodnesborough left wing free kick fired in low and at pace was diverted in for 6-2. Citys 7th came when the ball was stabbed in having come back off the post - not sure who got that one, and finally Rob Guttsell got his name on the scoresheet with a last minute penalty.
Despite their situation, Woodnesborough played the game in the right spirit, apart from one incident near the end when frustration for their number 11 seemed to take over for a mad moment. Otherwise, City made the most of their advantage. Man of the Match for me was Adam Woolcott, closely follwed by the Woddnesborough keeper.

There must be something wrong here. Am I in some kind drug enduced trance that I don't know of? For a moment there I saw the words Gutsell and scoresheet in close proximity but without the presence of a negative. Must be this strong coffee I'm drinking. I'll pop back to the site later in the day when I can guarantee that I'm awake.
Anyway who had the pleasure (?) of replacing the ref? |

S. Woolcott took the whistle and did a very decent job.
