Mears have no fight......

A solid performance from City on Saturday as they won three valuable points away at APM Mears.

A fairly quiet first half saw a couple of early chances for Callum McGeehan, a Mears strike hit the bar, a McGeehan cross just eluding both Luke Lockhart and the Mear's keeper at the far post, then a good move by McGeehan and Scott Lawford carved out a headed chance for Royston Gough which was saved and a free kick from Mears going wide and that was about it.

In fact the game didn't really get going until City broke the deadlock mid-way in the second half. That started much as the first had finished, very slowly and the game thus far was typified by the first real 'effort' on goal in the second half coming after about 60 minutes when a free-kick for Mears in a promising position went woefully well wide. Danny Wrench was then called into action saving well at the feet of a Mears forward following a decent left sided attack from the home team. Gough then lobbed well over from a McGeehan through ball. Finally, City got their noses in front - a Lawford free kick was played into the area and Lockhart rose to beat the oncoming keeper to the ball and head home 1-0. This goal seemed to galvanise the City team and they then went on the offensive, getting forward time and time again, with the excellent McGeehan pulling the strings in midfield with some quality passes and through balls. A good move involving half the team it seemed, ended with McGeehan going just wide from a Lawford cross, who also shone on the day. In deed it was he who set up Gough for City's second with some good work down the left 2-0. Wayne Fittall then had a chance, again set up by McGeehan. Danny Wrench then showed his inactivity wasn't affecting his concentration when he made a first rate point blank save, with the rebound going wide.

From a long clearance, Dan Bonnywell then had the chance to score but the ball got stuck between the keepers legs (no jokes please!!), and a Lawford cross come shot drifted wide. Finally a 'goal' from Bonnywell was unluckilly ruled offside, coming from an onside position Bonnywell latched onto a through ball took a couple of steps and lashed it in past the helpless keeper, but during doing so, Gough had run across him and the ball from an offside position and was therefore ruled offside by the Mears linesman presumably for interfering with play, (if that's the rule this week!!) and the goal was disallowed.

Star men this week, as already mentioned McGeehan and Laword and also a word for Ian Hossick at the back who also had an impressive game. A decent and vital away win for City without really showing their best. As for Mears, well they just didn't really look up for it on the day.
