Staplehurt!A convincing win for City today against a Staplehurst team that created very little in front of goal, played the first half mainly on the break as they were continually forced back by City, were restricted to mainly long range efforts, and left their best football until they were already four goals behind, but even then, although they knocked the ball around a bit they didn't really threaten Danny Wrench's goal.
City took the lead after about 15 minutes when Wayne Fittall ran onto a through ball, beating the offside trap and slotted past the keeper 1-0. There were several offside decisions against City in the first half and this could have disrupted their forward play on another day, Royston Gough then almost immediately made it two, but his shot went just over. Staplehurst had the chance to equalise when an uncharacteristic error from Ian Hossick, left a forward with a clear chance, but he disappointingly for them, shot wide. City continued to create chances, Callum McGeehan had a powerful goal bound shot just deflected on to the bar and over by the Staplehust keeper, and then soon after had a low, long range effort just scrambled wide. Gough again, almost made it two, when he failed by inches to connect with a free header. Fittall then sent away by a pass from Scott Lawford just failed to beat the keeper when one on one. It wasn't long though, before City deservedly got their second and it was the impressive Fittall that scored. A route one clearance from somewhere in the City defence, had him beating the keeper in the race to the ball and just lifting it over him, into the net off the post 2-0. Gough then made a chance for Lawford, but he missed his kick, McGeehan shot straight at the keeper and Fittall hit a post, before dominant City got their third. Sam Baker breaking down the right, benefitted from some good work by Ashley Tuite, who put him through for 3-0. Staplehurst managed one decent chance with a header well saved by Wrench, and Gough was unlucky when just as he was about to shoot goalwards, the ball spun away from him as though it had been bowled by Shane Warne (Who?)! The referee's half-time whistle came just at the right time for Staplehurst, who trooped off holding various inquests, trying to figure out just where it was all going wrong for them.
The second half started where the first had finished, City getting forward at every opportunity and Staplehurst again not offering much up front. Fittall was hungry for his hat-trick and had a couple of early chances - well set up by Gough he just volleyed powerfully over, and the sent through by McGeehan he was thwarted by the keeper. Gough then got City's fourth, a long ball from Micheal Seagers out of defence was latched on to by Gough who beat and rounded the keeper to make it 4-0. It was around this time that Staplehurst, began to play with a bit more freedom, probably part due to being resigned to their fate and part due to City easing up. Even so, after some inter play by Lawford and McGeehan a far post cross found Hossick unmarked in loads of space to side foot the ball home 5-0, cue more inquests in the Staplehurst defence! The game became more open and a bit end to end, Staplehurst attacking frequently, but with no real cutting edge, and City surging forward looking for more goals. Fittall, had a couple more chances to get his third, both set up by Gough, and Hossick had a second goal disallowed for pushing. Finally a great move involving Fittall and substitute Adam Woolcott set Gough up for his second, but he headed firmly wide, when it looked easier to score.
For their part, Staplehurst had lost all the answers they had, when the two teams drew in the league recently, but in fact City were a million miles better today then they were in that game, and in truth that was the difference. There were good performances all over the pitch for City today, Fittall looked back to his near best, the midfield of Ben Smith, Tuite and Rob Guttsell, on as a sub in the second half, did the grafting allowing McGeehan to spray the ball around for the three front men, and the defence once again looked a very solid unit.

A very accurate match report. Yes, on a difficult pitch City were a million times better than that disappointing performance back in December in West Malling!

A good performance and result indeed. In fact a good Saturday all round with Sheppey dropping two points at New Romney.
Let's hope it's as good next weekend when City try their luck at New Romney whilst Sheppey travel to Canterbury to face UKC. Any predictions? A double for the City of Canterbury I expect....

The Uni isn't Canterbury, it's just the outskirts of Tyler Hill and it's populated by folk who wouldn't have a clue what Ben Lee's was or where the Olive branch is. They'll have no idea what Greenfields was or where Henrici's was either. They're just a load of kids from elsewhere who make their neighbours lives miserable on the previously working class estates that they've annexed over the years. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Did anyone out there actually ever go into Greenfields? Walked past it plenty of times, even used the walls out the back after getting kicked out of the Flying Horse and being caught short a few times but never ventured in.... guess I never was into wax jackets and guns.

Oh dear!
md got kicked out of the Flying Horse and used to use walls and Socksy thinks students are "just a load of kids from elsewhere who make their neighbours lives miserable". What a lovely bunch you are! But what do I know ...

and your point is Mike ( unlucky for some 13 ) we all know walls age better with a certain amount of Uric Acid and as for students... well everyone hates them .... even the peop;e who teach them ?

md093834

Of course Mike - I was a student myself in those days......
Anyway don't most people leaving City centre pubs these days make a nuisance of themselves with the neighbours?
|
ghost of hawk

you wouldn't catch me relieving myself outside.
and besides the disturbances made by students leaving the pub will be nothing compared to the disturbances made by football hooligans leaving that proposed football hub.

exactly Ghost, look at the carnage that takes place in Bridge every Canterbury City match day, those holiday chalets at the side of the pitch have definitelygone down in value!
|

|
You're telling me they have gone down in value,
I've booked one from the £9.50 SUN holiday booklet for the weekend we play staplehurst and monarchs at home,
as a surprise for the Mrs as she is a big fan of S & M .
I would appreciate it though if you would all stand on the opposite side that weekend so you don't spoil my holiday.
|
md093834
|
Stand on the far side? Every one will be converging on Bridge just to come and see you and the missus in your holiday chalet!
Actually it's a shame that the pich at Bridge isn't larger because with all the money in the club (not! Sorry I heard two of the Staplehurst players talking about the facilities at Bridge not being what they'd expect of a club with our money!!!!) they'd make a great buy for executive boxes.....
|

Well where has all the money gone then ? I gave a whole £1 to some strange bloke last week whilst our usual raffle man was chasing weasles up and down a white line .... may miss todays game I have to go and look and flowers ! No really I do

Sounds like you and Socksy could almost be sharing the same lady.... only allowed to watch alternate games!!!! Priorities guys, priorities.
Still at least the weather did our Charlton fan a favour this weekend.

Socksy probably has this and many other links saved to his Favourites - look just above the section headed "The History of Canterbury". Lipton's and Wrights get a mention but why no Lefevres?

Ben Lees was a second hand shop then but still none the wiser really!

ben lees was a second hand shop on the site where cafe des amis is , and they always used to have copper pots and pans hanging outside.
and i'll add another one in,

Now even I remember the Momtaz and Curry Garden sitting side by side and I dont come from canterbury, I come from the posh part of Kent. You could have a pint, go for a curry then more beer and another curry next door and nobody looked at you like some fat drunk greedy bastardo ! I mean we was ... but nobody looked at us as if...? actually ? yeah its just hit home nobody looked at us ...... and SOCKSY as for not being at the same games as you ? I,m at every game ( flowers permitting ) not just the games with a warm bolt hole a few feet away.

So I was watching from the warmth of the catering area the other week. I DID say it was freezing outside. Anyway, Mawdsley wouldn't say I was watching from the tea hut or whatever, he'd use its proper name. Which is...... Actually, does anybody know what Wally would call the catering facilities at Bridge? There's a prize of a free cuppa from me to the first person to give it its correct Mawdsleyism name.

335 topics. 2155 posts. And now Socksy you mention that name....
There are some things worth remembering and others not. When the club was reformed I thought we'd be able to forget about that chapter of history completely (well almost). It'll take more than a free tea for me to get over it......

mawdsley would call it his tea bar and keep all the takings for himself.
or if you listened to the officials/puppets at the time
he would not call it anything but you know he would have been there 3 hours before the game cleaning it when he'd finished scrubbing the showers

Unlucky guys, Mawdsley laughingly called the misappropriation of our grandstand a '£100,000 facelift with a glass fronted viewing academy'. That's a restaurant to you and me!
I remember delivering gas cylinders to the stadium at the end of one particular season and there were a load of cowboys pulling apart what was a perfectly adequate stand, sawing wood and more or less hammering the final nails into our club. The bar was seemingly being sub-let to a language school and was full of foreign kids. A nice little earner if you will.
The rest is history, the boot fair money, the Chelsea money etc, but what's risen from the ashes should be appreciated and respected. We need to learn the lessons from our history and never let the club fall into the hands of one man.
